Located at 402 East 78th Street in Yorkville between First and York Avenues, this original Sushi of Gari offers a full menu created by Gari himself. Gari became a sushi chef in Japan at the age of 19 and now runs his four restaurants in New York City as well as one in Tokyo, Japan. The price range of the menu is on the higher side for these unique pieces which are intentionally created to not need soy sauce. Offerings such as red snapper, snow crab, salmon belly, tuna, and ceviche. An extensive sake list rounds out the meal, and the rice is a favorite. Sitting at the 10 person sushi bar makes the meal into an enjoyable experience. Open for dinner every day 5pm-10:45pm. Reservations are an option; take out and delivery are also available.
Between 62nd and 63rd at 1143 First Avenue sits Sushi Seki. A large menu variety, not completely traditional Japanese, with mid to high prices. Well known for omakase and spicy scallop roll. Fourteen kinds of sake are offered. Dining room is small and quiet, but the best sushi experience comes from eating at the sushi bar. Sushi Seki is great for late night cravings as it is open from 5:30pm until 3am M-Sat. Closed Sundays. Reservations and take out are allowed. No delivery.
On the more affordable end of sushi and Asian fusion restaurants is Amber, located at 1406 Third Avenue. Offers a full bar and featured menu items include a Thai spiced chicken wrap, golden dragon roll with salmon and avocado, and steamed Chilean sea bass. Amber is open for lunch hours from 12 noon to 3pm M-F, and then reopens at 5pm until 11pm, as well as Sat-Sun 5pm-11pm. Reservations are taken. Delivery and Takeout are available. Outdoor/patio/sidewalk seating is available.
At Tanoshi, located at 1372 York Avenue between 73rd and 74th Streets, Chef Toshio Oguma brings the art of sushi to the bar with a full traditional menu of omakase, monfish liver, uni, and eel with a mid to high price range. A casual and intimate sushi bar with twelve seats. Guests should bring their own alcoholic beverages if they choose. Booked well in advance so guests should call for reservations. Open for dinner from 6pm-10pm T-Sat. Closed Sun-Mon.
